So with the new year upon us it’s time to take a quick look at my ten most anticipated games that will be coming out in 2016. With a wide range of variety I’m sure there’s one on this list that everyone can look forward to as well.
10. LEGO Marvel Avengers
I’m not ashamed to admit that these LEGO games are some of my favorite games to play. They are great for co-op play, which I end up playing these with the girlfriend, who also enjoys playing these. All of the LEGO games have great charm and humor throughout and being made with some of my favorite franchises always makes these a blast. LEGO Marvel Avengers is one that I’m really looking forward to and it’s going to be a short wait since it releases at the end of January! The game covers the Marvel films: The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: The First Avenger, Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. With all those films crammed into this game it should be a mega awesome time!
Announced this last year by Bethesda at E3 is DOOM or “Doom 4” however you want to look at it. While there is no specific release date announced for this, Bethesda expects it to be out within Q1 or Q2 of 2016. This version of DOOM seems to be more of a “reboot” for the franchise rather than a continuation from the previous games. The game had a closed Alpha back in October and reviews based off that have been on the positive side. What was shown at E3 looked great and this first-person shooter looks to be a great scary time to be had this coming year!
8. Mafia III
Mafia III is one of those surprise games for me that has been announced for next year, although no solid date has been set as of yet. It was mostly a surprise because the last game was released all the way back in 2010. With that said this looks like it’s going to be a fun time. Taking place in the late 60s in New Orleans it will have a cool setting, time period and the fact it’s centered around the mob. The graphics look great from what has been shown so far as well, so it will be interesting to see what can be accomplished with it. I’m sure we’ll see Mafia III sometime late-Spring or Summer this year.
7. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
Coming off what I could call a surprise hit, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, is the cyberpunk-themed action rpg sequel brought to you by Square Enix. Mankind Divided got some interesting press early on when pre-orders were announced with the way Square Enix decided to go about their pre-order bonuses. With all the backlash they received from the gaming community changes were made and moved to the more traditional pre-order bonuses. You’ll be playing once again as Adam Jensen that will give you some new technology and body augmentations. The cyberpunk theme is what really draws me into this one and makes me excited to play this. With a late summer release of August 2016, Deus Ex will fill a nice void in the typical empty summer months.
6. Dark Souls III
Dark Souls, the game that has the capability to make you want to rip your hair out from how difficult and unforgiving it can be. That is where the fun in Dark Souls is though, and getting a great sense of accomplishment when you finally beat that boss after trying for the twentieth time. So for a third time, (fourth if you count Bloodborne) From Software is back bringing what looks to be an amazing and difficult game to put ourselves through this year. Maybe even the possibility to be game of year, but we shall see. From Software has also said that this will be the last game in the Dark Souls franchise, so it’ll be kind of bittersweet when it comes time to play this in April.
Ever since Below was announced back in 2013 at E3 I’ve been intrigued by it. The art-style looks great and what really drew me to the game in the first place. Below is an adventure game that is viewed from the top-down perspective as well, with an emphasis on exploration and difficulty. Musically the game also seems like it will have a great score to look forward. There is no solid date as of yet for Below, but the studio has said it will be finally released in 2016.
I hadn’t really heard or looked into Scalebound all that much until E3 this last year when they showed some gameplay. After seeing that I was sold on this! I mean there are DRAGONS in this, what more can you ask?! Just from seeing it it kind of throws off a Final Fantasy vibe with how the combat is presented. Hopefully we’ll find out more details in the coming months and possibly E3 this year seeing how this looks to be a late 2016 release.
3. Mass Effect: Andromeda
Bioware hasn’t given us a whole lot of information about the next game in the Mass Effect franchise. This is looking to be a sequel to the original trilogy and taking place in the Andromeda galaxy. And that is about all we know about this so far with only a couple mysterious trailers shown. I’m hoping to find out more from E3 this year, and maybe found out if it will in fact be released this coming year. It’s rumored to be out in 2016, but time will tell if Bioware decides it is ready for this year.
This is the game that surprised me the most at E3. It came out of nowhere from me and it’s coming from a smaller studio, Coldwood Interactive and being published by EA. It’s a physics-based puzzle platformer and you play as a character made out of yarn. You will go with Yarny (cutest name ever?) on his travels to find his family. I’m hoping for this to be a big sleeper hit of next year and we won’t have to wait long since Unravel comes out February 9th.
1. Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2
The first Garden Warfare was probably my favorite game from 2014. It came as quite a surprise since it looked like such a kid’s game, but is very much a serious shooter in a fun, quirky skin. I spent countless hours with this game and look forward to spend many more with the sequel. Garden Warfare 2 looks to take the same core mechanics from the first game and expand on that. There even seems to be double the content to an already packed game. Add free DLC that’s sure to be added over the life of Garden Warfare 2 and you have a game of the year contender in my eyes. Be on the lookout for this game come late February.
